The EU Succession Regulation (Brussels IV)
EU Regulation 650/2012 (Brussels IV) harmonises the rules on jurisdiction and applicable law in cross-border succession matters across EU member states. Wills and succession documents that fall under Brussels IV may circulate between member states and must be translated for each jurisdiction where they are presented. The translation must reflect the legal concepts of the source document in terms that are legally meaningful in the target jurisdiction.
When sworn translation is required
Most EU member states and many non-EU jurisdictions require that a will presented for probate or registration in a foreign language be accompanied by a sworn translation from a court-registered translator. In Belgium, this means a translator registered with one of the five Belgian courts of appeal. The certification statement is a legal requirement, not a formality.
