Power of attorney translation in Belgium: legal validity across borders
A power of attorney (POA) authorises one person to act on behalf of another in legal, financial or administrative matters. When the grantor and the recipient of the power, or the institutions before which it will be used, operate in different languages, the power of attorney must be translated accurately and, in many cases, certified to be legally effective.
Power of attorney translation in Belgium is required for notarial acts, property transactions, company registration, inheritance proceedings, immigration procedures and court appearances where the principal cannot or does not attend in person. The translation must reflect the scope of the powers granted with absolute precision: an overbroad or underspecified translation can either exceed the principal’s intentions or fail to authorise the necessary acts. BeTranslated handles POA translation through its legal translation services.

Why specialist expertise matters
The legal scope of the powers granted
Powers of attorney are not generic documents. Each grants specific powers — to sign a specific contract, to represent in specific proceedings, to manage a specific account — and these powers must be translated exactly as they are defined in the original. A translator who paraphrases rather than translates precisely, or who expands a limited power into a general one, creates a document that does not accurately reflect the principal’s instructions.
Apostille and consular legalisation
Powers of attorney that will be used abroad typically require authentication: an Apostille under the Hague Convention (for the 125+ signatory countries) or consular legalisation for non-signatory countries. The translation may be required before or after legalisation depending on the jurisdiction. BeTranslated advises on the appropriate sequence for each destination country.

Belgium’s diverse resident population generates a continuous and structural demand for official document translation.
