Legal Translation Services
Legal translation for every legal system
Legal translation is a highly specialized field where accuracy is non-negotiable. Each country operates within its own legal framework, with system-specific concepts and terminology that often have no direct equivalents in other languages. In many cases, a precise translation requires carefully adapted wording or brief clarification to ensure the original legal meaning is fully understood by the target audience.
The same legal term can carry different implications depending on the jurisdiction, whether in Belgium, France, or the Netherlands. For this reason, legal translators must combine advanced linguistic skills with a deep understanding of the relevant legal systems in both the source and target languages. Inaccurate translations can expose businesses to serious legal and financial risks, making expertise and precision essential.

FAQ on legal translation
1st line
What is legal translation?
Legal translation covers all documents with legal force, where accuracy and legal equivalence are essential. The translator’s role is not only linguistic, but also legal: to reproduce the original meaning in a way that preserves the legal effects of the source text in the target country.
Because each country operates under its own legal system, legal translation requires a comparative law approach. For example, translating from English to French involves moving between the Anglo-Saxon common law system and the Roman law tradition used in much of Europe.
This also affects the type of validation required. In the UK and other English-speaking countries, legal documents are usually provided as certified translations. In countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, and France, the equivalent legal requirement is a sworn translation, produced by a court-authorised translator. While the terminology differs, both serve the same purpose: ensuring that the translation is legally valid for official use.
How to Become a Legal Translator?
To become a legal translator, one must first perfectly master at least one foreign language as well as one’s native language. Next, it is necessary to hold a translation degree (there are certain training programs specifically dedicated to the field of legal translation). Finally, in practice, most legal translators have undergone parallel training in law, whether general or specialised (training in contract law, real estate law, or criminal law, etc.).
Which documents require legal translation?
The documents subject to legal translation are mostly those used to prove the existence of a legal entity before the administration, such as Kbis extracts or company statutes, but they may also include commercial documents (contracts, general terms and conditions of sale), notarized acts (wills, deeds of sale), judicial procedure documents (court decisions, minutes, legal conclusions, witness statements), civil registry acts (extracts from birth or death certificates, marriage certificates, passports), certificates (diplomas, driver’s licenses), etc.

How much does a legal translation cost?
The cost of a translation always depends on the type of document in question and its characteristics (duration, language, field of specialisation, particular difficulties…). The cost of a certified translation falls into the upper average range, as this type of translation requires the translator to have specific technical skills and also to be familiar with the field of law. Finally, the cost of a sworn translation is always more expensive than a simple unsworn translation.
Why is the quality of a legal translation important?
The quality of a legal translation is critical because it directly affects the validity, enforceability, and interpretation of legal documents across jurisdictions.
Legal texts are binding by nature. A single mistranslated term, ambiguous clause, or missing nuance can change the legal meaning of a contract, policy, or court document. This may lead to disputes, regulatory non-compliance, financial loss, or even the invalidation of the document.
Legal systems also differ significantly from one country to another. Concepts, procedures, and terminology rarely align perfectly between jurisdictions. High-quality legal translation ensures that the original intent is preserved while adapting the content to the legal reality of the target country.
Finally, professional legal translations protect organisations from risk. They support clear communication with international partners, regulators, and courts, and help maintain credibility, legal certainty, and trust in cross-border operations.
What is a certified translation?
A sworn translation, also known as a certified translation or jurat translation, is a translation with official value recognised by the administration and judicial authorities of a country. It must be carried out by a sworn translator, registered and having taken an oath before an appeals court. The sworn translator affixes his stamp and signature on the translation as well as on the original document. In order for a translation to be “certified as conforming to the original,” the original document must also include a unique registration number.
Note: Sworn translations are very often required to be made from the original document, and not from a copy.
