Simultaneous and consecutive interpreting in Belgium: professional interpreting for every setting
Simultaneous and consecutive interpreting are the two professional modes through which a trained interpreter renders speech from one language into another in real time. They serve different purposes, require different techniques and suit different event formats. Understanding the distinction is the first step to commissioning the right service for your needs.
Simultaneous interpreting is delivered in real time while the speaker continues, typically from a soundproofed booth via headset. It is the standard mode for large conferences, international summits, plenary sessions and any event where participants need uninterrupted multilingual access. Consecutive interpreting is delivered after the speaker pauses, with the interpreter rendering the passage from notes. It is suited to smaller meetings, negotiations, medical consultations, legal hearings and settings where no booth equipment is available. BeTranslated coordinates both modes through its interpretation services.

Why specialist expertise matters
Simultaneous interpreting: when the event cannot stop
Simultaneous interpreting requires exceptional cognitive stamina. The interpreter must listen to the source, process the meaning, restructure it grammatically in the target language and speak it, all while tracking the speaker’s pace and anticipating what comes next. Professional simultaneous interpreters typically work in teams of two, alternating every 30 minutes to maintain accuracy and concentration. For events of more than two hours, two interpreters per language combination are standard.
Consecutive interpreting: when the format allows a pause
Consecutive interpreting is well suited to smaller-scale settings where a pause in the conversation is natural and acceptable. A bilateral negotiation, a deposition in a legal context, a medical examination or a guided tour all work well with consecutive interpreting. The interpreter listens to a full passage, takes structured notes and then delivers an accurate rendition. Quality is at least as high as simultaneous, but the event takes approximately 60% longer than a monolingual equivalent.
