Laten we ons de dramatische gevolgen voorstellen van een foutieve vertaling met betrekking tot een chirurgisch instrument of de bijsluiter van een medicijn \u2026<\/p>\n

Om een voorbeeld te geven: een 18-jarige pati\u00ebnt in een coma wordt opgenomen in een ziekenhuis in Florida.<\/p>\n

Een tweetalig lid van het personeel (zonder professionele taalkundige achtergrond) vertaalde het Spaanse<\/a> woord “intoxicado” (wat “intoxicated” betekent) naar het Engelse<\/a> woord “intoxicated” (wat doorgaans verwijst naar dronken of drugsgebruik).<\/p>\n

De werkelijke betekenis van “intoxicado” was “vergiftigd” en had vertaald moeten worden als “poisoned”.<\/p>\n

De pati\u00ebnt had een hersenbloeding. Deze ernstige vertaalfout liet de pati\u00ebnt tetraplegisch achter.<\/p>\n
